On Saturday 23 July, Chris and I joined members and supporters of the wealden line campaign on their annual sponsored walk, to help lobby and publicise for a reinstatement of the rail link between these two towns. As far as reinstatements go this is an acid test of the governments commitment to public transport and integration. The railway was a 'dirty' closure - being politically motivated, as the line was profitable to the end in 1969... Alastair Darling has dismissed the idea recently in parliament - so the fight continues. Lewes High Street. The viaduct used to cross in the foreground. Remains of embankment in Lewes park trackbed at Hamsey Looking from the Bluebell trackbed towards Culver Junction and the Uckfield line trackbed. Barcombe Mills station As above Permitted bridleway north of Barcombe Mills station Looking back to station Rusty remains of twin track bridge Rails still in place! Brutally gas axed at Anchor Lane Isfield - Lavender line, at least a small part of the line lingers on. Crossing gates immediately across road from above picture Looking away from Isfield down track. Note 'thumper' being renovated. The kind staff gave us a round trip. This is as far as it goes (about a mile) Our conveyance Even better, we were spared some walking by setting down at the second crossing. Uckfield - a sight to create sore eyes! Ex BR station yard Walkway into old station The platform is on the second line trackbed.
